How to identify properties and configuration of elements using position?

Period no. tell that how many shells are present in element.Ex- na is in 3rd period and it has three shells.

Elements having valence electron 1 is present in 1st group, with 2 in 2nd, with 3 in 10+3=13th group, with 4 in 14th..........and with 8 in 18th group.
