A reaction which involes gain of oxygen or loss of hydrogen is called an oxidation reaction.
For example -
ZnO + C -------- Zn +Co
(1) C has gained oxygen to form CO. Hence, C has been oxidized.
(2) ZnO has lost oxygen to form Zn. Hence, ZnO has been reduced to Zn.
reduction is defined as a process which gain hydrogen and loss oxygen.
