you can use red cabbage juice
for acidic substances it turns Ed
for basic substances it turns green

You can always use one of the other indicators! Phenolphthalein and Methyl Orange are your best bets.


Another, though impractical idea is to transfer half this solution into another container, and add an acid in one container and a base in the other. If the container in which you added the acid neutralized, then your solutionĀ is a base; if the container in which you added the base neutralized, then you solution is an acid.
