The difference between subordinate and principal clauses is that principal clauses are independent clauses (I. E. Their meaning is clear and they don't depend on another clause in order to be meaningful ) while subordinate clauses are dependent clauses and require a principal clause in order to be meaningful. When you are asked to identify them, split the sentence and check which half is independent (I. E. Makes sense) and which half is dependent (I. E. Is meaningless without the first half).
