Cholesterol is an essential fatty substance that flows in body via blood stream. It forms a part of the cell walls, nerve coverings and brain cells. So it has an important function in the body. Excess of cholesterol in the body is called hypercholesterolemia. At secondary level it leads to diabetes, kidney or liver related disease or underactive thyroid glands.
Causes of High Cholesterol
In majority of cases fatty and high calorie diet and obesity are responsible for high cholesterol. In some cases genetic factors are also responsible for high level of cholesterol. High cholesterol is also linked with people who smoke regularly and drink excessive alcohol. Lack of physical activity is also a cause of weight gain resulting in increased LDL level and reduction of HDL leading to elevated total cholesterol levels.
