Frictional force can be increased in the following ways:

  • Make surface of the object rough so that it becomes difficult to glide the object against other objects or surfaces.
  • Remove lubricants from the object/surface because un-lubricated surfaces generate friction.
  • Consider creating sliding friction rather than rolling friction as it increases the surface area of the object in contact with another surface and greater surface area leads to more friction
  • Increase air/water resistance by avoiding streamlined shape of objects.
  • Use powders to generate friction as done by wrestlers with the intension to strengthen their grip.

Friction is a force between 2 surfaces that are sliding, or trying to slide across one another, for example when you try to push a toy car along the floor.

Friction always works in the direction opposite from the direction of object is moving, or trying to move.

Methods to increase the friction :

  • Increasing the irregularities on the surfaces in contact
  • Using high friction material such as rubber
  • Increasing the normal reaction between the surface
  • Increase the number of moving surface
  • By avoiding use of lubricants
