  • There are lots of introverts like us in college. The first thing is to realize that it is not compulsory to be like the extroverts. Don’t do things you do not enjoy just to get into a crowd. You could try making your college subjects your hobby and doing really well in them. You will probably find some similar people who will be your quiet friends. (As you say, you can be helpful.)

  • Be polite and pleasant, but don’t push yourself forward (it’s not our style).

  • However, steel yourself to put your hand up in class sometimes. The staff are actually there to help. If a smart person like you does not understand, then probably most of the others are puzzled. Don’t leave it to the loudmouths. Get the reputation of someone who does not say much, but when they do, it is worth hearing.

  • At some point (and probably several times) you will have to make some kind of presentation. Practice beforehand. Speak slowly and clearly, looking around the room (not just at the academic). Find someone else who does not like it, and help each other both by encouragement and feedback (if you are speaking too loud or soft).

  • Some of the academics are actually introverts, and found it hard to start lecturing. They had to be brave.
