Answer:

Firstly if we are talking about hunter-gatherers migrating out of Africa because of climate changes in an unknown world the only direction needed was the one that led to food and a milder climate. The concept of direction would be decided more by the motivation to survive than to get somewhere in particular since they did not know what was ahead of them; only behind them.

I cannot understand this perpetuated drama of not knowing general directions. Early hunter-gatherer groups surely did not need or want to travel at night; surely they were more interested in following game and climate (for plant foods) than going any particular direction - after all these were migrations out of Africa. If I were to guess agriculture probably started before settling down; taking seeds, reseeding some from the best in the same area then revisiting - some they may have taken with them

Multiple generations might travel in circles to revisit plants at harvest times and/or game as it would have the same motivation. They were not intentionally colonizing anywhere. As climate changed and got colder they probably moved south towards the length of sky the sun moves east to west in. I suppose in moving for days through a thick forest they would look for moss on the north side of trees to keep from walking in circles
