2n power 2.
no. of electrons in each shell.
first shell- 2 electrons
second shell- 8 electrons
third shell- 18 electrons

Find out the number of electrons in that element. Then arrange them in configuration. Following the rule 2n^2 when n is the number of shells. However, if M is the last shell it will contain only 8 electrons, not 11.
For eg- Oxygen atomic number is 8. Hence it has 8 electrons. K shell- 2 Mshell- 6 since M shell is the last shell. It has 6 valence electrons.
