how to know if a word problem says to find hcf or lcm? (class 10 maths ch 1) Take this question as an example! And plz say how to know if we need to find lcm or hcf in such type questions?​​ help fast

In this particular question you have to take LCM(Least Common Multiple) because you need to find the Common time at which they meet.

In any question where you have to find common interval,time,period,steps, etc. you will take the LCM.

Another way to look at it is the LCM is always greater than or equal to the given number(s) and (in the given question) the characters can only meet when one have completed the circle or both may complete a particular amount of periods(different for both).... [Ignore if it's not understandable]

And for HCF its pretty straight forward you have to use it whenever wanting to factorise or divide.
