There are so many ways to get know that, Your computer can be updated/upgraded or not. First of all, there are different meanings of Update and Upgrade in computer languages.

While upgrading our windows version, we have to first select The data and programs which we have to keep. So, here is the way to upgrade your windows version. As per as your question, you have to upgrade your version to windows 8. I'm sorry, because Windows can't be upgraded online. I have given that, How to upgrade our windows version to windows 10.
For upgrading windows 10: 3.5 GB data needed, It will take 2 hours, You can format your all data, As well as, you can keep it.
So, Here is a way to upgrade your windows version:
i) Go to browser and search for Windows 10 Media creation toolkit . Download it from official Microsoft website
ii) It's size will be 24 MB. After downloading, Open it. It will show you, Getting things ready.
iii) Read the terms and conditions and click on accept as shown in the screenshot.
iv) Now, It will ask you 'What you want to do'

ii) Create installation media
So, If you to click here on Upgrade this PC now. And, if you have to create installation media in USB, then you can click on second option
v) Now, It will start downloading of windows 10
vi) For downloading it, you need 3.5 GB of data.....
vii) After downloading it, Click on next and then Install.
viii) Again it will ask to what to keep, you will have to click on Upgrade this PC now.
ix) After this, Windows will restart several times and it will take 1 Hour here.
x) Now, you will be able to use windows 10
Your password will be not changed after upgrading windows if you will not click on Format. As well as, your all files will be not deleted after upgrading windows.
