The steel plant was separated from the township by a hill range which acted like a wall. It was a nature's endowment and the planners exploited it for the benefit of everyone staying in the steel township. The steel industry is known to be highly polluting but I never felt it because of the natural, physical barrier of the hillock.

We drank water directly from the tap and only during the monsoon did we boil it for the mud to settle. The water was treated in the waterworks only.

After the initial hiccup of getting admission I was fortunate to get into one of the good schools and was also lucky to get a good place to stay nearby. The first thing that struck me was that we needed to buy water both for drinking and cooking. Three months down the line we also started buying water for bathing.
