》Herbarium file is a collection of preserved plant specimens and associated data used for scientific study.

》The term can also refer to the building or room where the specimens are housed, or to the scientific institute that not only stores but uses them for research.

》Gently press on the specimen with a paper towel to fix it to the page and blot up any excess glue.

》Then cover each page with wax paper and stack them with cardboard in between.

A herbarium is a collection of preserved plant specimens that have been properly conserved, databased, and organized so that students, researchers, and the general public may access them quickly for scientific study and teaching.

About Herbarium:

  • A herbarium is a collection of preserved plant specimens and data that is utilized in scientific research.
  • A fungarium, or analogous collection of preserved mushrooms, is commonly referred to as a fungarium in mycology.
  • A xylarium is a herbarium that specializes in wood specimens.
  • The term Hortorium (as in the Liberty Hyde Bailey Hortorium) has been used to refer to a herbarium that specializes in conserving plant material.

How do you construct one?

  • Making your herbarium is an easy and enjoyable activity that anybody can complete with a few basic items.

1. Gathering Plant Specimens: Look for interesting plants in a variety of outdoor settings.

  • Take close-up shots of the plant and its environs.
  • Keep track of important information about the plant and its surroundings.
  • Using a sharp pair of pruning shears, make a few cuts.
  • Use a sturdy container or a thick plastic bag to transport your specimens home.

2. Putting Pressure on Your Specimens: To prepare your cuttings for pressing, clean, and prune them.

  • Make your own plant press out of hardboard or plywood.
  • Arrange your specimens on the press's bottom half.
  • To produce pressure, close the press and place heavy things on top.
  • Dry and press your specimens for another 2-21 days.

3. Plant Installation and Labeling: Apply non-acidic PVA adhesive to your dry specimens.

  • Place your plants on a sheet of acid-free paper and press them down.
  • To classify each of your specimens, make label cards.
  • Attach your labels to your herbarium sheets using glue.
