Convert alkenes using anti-Markovnikov addition. With oxymercuration-demercuration, you have a reaction that converts alkenes into Markovnikov-product alcohols. To make the alcohol on the least-substituted carbon (called the anti-Markovnikov product) you use hydroboration.
