First of all write the symbol of element then write the valence electrons around it representing them by dot for e.g.
for hydrogen H . for helium .He.

firstly draw simple structure of a compound... then put its valency with the element as i have drawn in picture.. then make a group of either 2 electrons or 8 electrons
