Take a small piece of sodium in a fussion tube.

Heat the tube slightly on a Bunsen burner so that the sodium melts to a shining golblue.

Add a pinch of organic compound.

Heat is slowly to Start with so that the compound reacts with sodium metal.

Now heat the tube strongly till it becomes red hot.

Plug the red hot tube into a china dish

containing distilled water.

Crush the contents with a glass rod and heat to boiling point.

Stop heating and remove the insoluble matter by filtration.

The filtration is called Lassaigne's Extract (L.S).

hope it helps you.....

Aim of the experiment - To make Lassaigne's Extract(Preparation of L.S)

Materials required - China Dish, Organic Compound, Funnel, Tripotstand, Wire Gauze, Distilled water, Bunsen Burner, Fusion Tube, Test Tubes, Sodium Metal, Small Spatula, Forceps.

Procedure -

  1. Take a small piece of Sodium metal using forceps.
  2. Place the sodium metal in the filter paper and dry it using another paper.
  3. Hold a fusion tube with a tong and put the dry Sodium Metal in it.
  4. Heat the fusion tube slightly over the bunsen burner.
  5. Take a pinch of an organic compounds in the small spatula.
  6. Add the organic compound to the fusion tube.
  7. Heat the fusion tube in the china dish containing distilled water.
  8. "The tube will break". Crush the tube with a glass rod.
  9. Heat the content of a china dish at the boiling point for a few minutes.
  10. Stop heating it when the content becomes one-third of the original content.
  11. Take a filter paper, place the funnel that is fixed to a stand and filter the contents of the china dish through the funnel to a clean test tube placed under the funnel
  12. The filtrate is called Lassaigne's Extract.

Now,

It can be used for the Detection of Nitrogen, Halogens, etc.
