how to measure river discharge

River discharge is the volume of water flowing across in time.

Measure the speed v of water through some means and then know the height h (depth) of the water stream which flows.  We know the width w of the river at the point where other measurements are done.

h * w gives area of cross section of the river that is flowing. If that is not in the shape of a rectangle, then using proper geometric means, the area is calculated.

 Volume flow = river discharge =  h * w * v in terms of cubic meters/hour..

If we multiply with the duration in hours or days, we get total river discharge.

Hey mate!

I am here with your answer!

river discharge is computed by multiplying the area of water in a channel cross section by the average velocity of the water in that cross section: discharge = area velocity.

Hope this will help you!
