If you have an ultrasound scan in early pregnancy, and the placenta is shown to be near your cervix, try not to worry. As your baby grows, your expanding uterus is likely to pull the placenta upwards and away from your cervix. This is called placental migration and it happens in about 90 per cent of cases where the placenta is low-lying in early pregnancy.
If the placenta is still lying low in your uterus after you are 20 weeks pregnant, it's called placenta praevia. Even at this stage, the placenta may still move up and away from the cervix, giving enough space inside your pelvis for your baby to be born vaginally.
