For quite a while I had wanted to take piano lessons, but because I was raising a family and teaching and coaching full time, I could not find any room in my schedule. I met with Larry Smith, a wonderful pianist and piano teacher who lives in Duxbury, and he suggested lessons before school at 5:30 am. So I set my alarm for an even earlier wake up and headed out for lessons. I did this for a year. I did learn to read music much better and could play several simple piano pieces. My problem was finding enough time to practice, and later, after stopping lessons, to keep on practicing. My neighbor and friend, Don DeCamp, an excellent trumpet player, has a saying he lives by: "Miss one day of practice and you know it, miss two days and those next to you know it, miss three days and everyone knows it!" I have found this adage to be quite accurate.
