Well, this pretty much depends on the condition and requirement.
If the bowler is consistently bowling on a good channel and you are looking to attack, dominate the bowler, you can stand a bit outside of the crease. This would result in ball being slightly full in length and you can try to nudge the ball around for a single, this could be risky and you could be a LBW candidate. Try to play a straight drive. You can also try to step out and play a lofted drive, this would force the bowler to change the line. However these are some risky shots.
If you are looking to defend, then once the ball is bowled, get quickly back on the crease and try to hit the ball around cover or long off region. Good footwork, always helps. Make sure not to disturb your furniture. :)
