1. Oiling and greasing

This keeps out water , it is used in moving engine parts where other methods cannot be used due to friction

2. Sacrificial protection

It is whereby blocks of a more reactive metal is attached to iron object/structure using a conductor, hence the more reactive metal corrode in the place of iron.

This method is aaplied in ships, water and oil pipes.

3. Painting

Keeps out water and oxygen. (but if cracks occur rusting will take place)

4. Alloying

Mixing iron with other metal which does not rust e.g Nickel

5. Galvanization

Coating iron with a thin layer of zinc.

The advantage is that if there is crack, zinc will corrode instead of iron
