In plant like maize ( Corn ) the root system is fibrous and shallow ( Does not go deep) and cannot support the tall plant properly . So prop roots develop from the lower nodes ( So aerial ) .These roots go down in the soil and branch further , giving the plant ADDITIONAL support required
