How to put cotton in ear with vaseline?

I'm supposed to keep my ears dry because I'm recovering from Swimmer's Ear. I read that you can place a ball of cotton soaked with vaseline on the bowl of the ear, not inside the canal, to keep out the water. I've tried coating the half ball of cotton and plugging up my ears with that. The problem is after showering, I take the cotton balls out and my ear is covered with vaseline.
I have a difficult time trying to clean out the vaseline, which I do with a combination of q-tips and tissue paper. I'm afraid to even go anywhere near the opening of the ear canal because that's how I got swimmer's ear in the first place, by sticking my fingers into my ear. As a result, I have this messy goop by the opening of the ear canal which I leave until the
