In order to read a child's mind, you should start thinking like a child. Like, how would you feel if you were on the receiving end if you were a child. Maybe first you should start talking to the kid and make him/her comfortable with you, so that they share everything with you. Maybe then it wouldn't be very difficult to know what a child is thinking because you would understand his facial expressions as you would spend plenty amount of time with them.
