The temporary hardness can be removed by, by boiling, carbon dioxide is driven off and soluble hydrogen carbonates are converted to insoluble carbonates and can be removed by filteration or decantation

The permanent hardness is removed by:-

Water is treated by calculated quantity of soda ash to remove permanent hardness of water

For removal of both temporary and permanent hardness :-

For Large amount of water, the permutit method is used

Permutit is a artificial zeolite. It is hydrated Sodium aluminium orthosilicate having the formula

Na₂Al₂Si₂O₈.xH₂O
