The shaded portion represents the set name below the diagram.

Let A and B be the two sets.

The union of A and B is the set of all those elements which belong either to A or to B or both A and B.

Now we will use the notation A U B (which is read as 'A union B') to denote the union of set A and set B.

The set of A U B may be represented by the shaded portion in venn diagram.

The three situations are :

  • A and B are overlapping sets
  • A and B are disjoint sets
  • A ⊆ B

These 3 situations are represented  in the diagram below.

Venn Diagrams:

  • A Venn diagram is a closed figure used to denote a set. Points within such a closed figure represents the elements of the set.
  • The universal set U is usually represented by a rectangle. All other sets are represented by closed curves (usually circles) within the rectangle.
  • All the elements of a set are indicated by points inside the circle representing the set.
  • The elements can also be written inside the circle without marking the points.
  • An object that is not a member of a set is placed outside the circle representing the set.
