The Taj Mahal has been seriously damaged by the extreme climatic conditions and monsoon rains which have led to water infiltration and erosion of the white marble exterior. Pollution from the heavy traffic has moreover discoloured the marble. The monument lovers through public petitions have taken the following steps to protect the monument:
1. Creation of a green buffer zone (tree plantation) around Taj to reduce pollution.
2. A number of coal- based industries have been asked to switch to gas- based industries or close down the units. Many industrial units have already faced closure of operation in the absence of installing the anti-pollution measures as ordered. The vehicles are strictly checked for pollution and the vehicular traffic around Taj Mahal has been banned. The parking is kept at a safe distance
