Economic growth provides the resources needed to invest in human development. It increases the opportunities for employment. As there is no unemployment and the people earn more their standard of living improves. They are able to educate their children, including the girls. They in turn become capable of taking up better jobs and earning. In this way economic growth helps to reduce poverty.

India's economic growth has been one of the fastest in the world during the eighties. The growth rate increased from the average of about 3.5% a year in the 1970s to about 6% during the 1980s and 1990s. This helped to bring about a significant reduction of poverty.

Economic growth or progress improves the quality of life for a country's citizens, provided the benefits percolate down to the lowest levels of society. This is called inclusive growth and equitable distribution of wealth. In countries of South-east Asia, like Indonesia and Malaysia, phenomenal progress has been made over the past few decades and the economic lot of their people have improved along with the country's GDP. Singapore was an outpost around 50 years ago; thanks to the visionary leadership of Lee Kuan Yew, this city state moved from a third world status to a first world one in a single generation.

When a country develops economically, its infrastructure, energy supply, healthcare, education system, transportation etc. develops equally, benefiting all and sundry; more jobs are created, trade develops and the purchasing power shows an upward rise in real terms. The best catalyst for poverty alleviation is by creating gainful employment for the unemployed and the destitute.

In Eastern Europe, substantial economic progress has been made ever since political freedom was attained not too long ago; the people of these countries have benefited with the changes that have taken place.

India has one major problem that it needs to tackle before it truly becomes successful in pulling out its people from the morass of poverty. India must address the issue of continuous population growth if it too wants to be counted among those nations that have distributed the benefits of its economic growth among all sections of its population.
