Separation strategy for mixture of water, sand, salt and iron filings:

  • Move a magnet through the concoction of the three solids while it is wrapped in a plastic sandwich wrap. The magnet will hold the iron shavings.
  • Stir with water as you combine the remaining salt and sand.
  • Remove the sand from the salt water solution by filtering it via a funnel, flask, and filter paper. To get rid of the last of the salt from the sand in the filter paper, wash it with some fresh water.
  • Place the sand in a separate area and let it dry in the sun or a warm oven.
  • Gather all the salt water, weigh it, and then evaporate the water.
  • Weigh each of the dispersed solids individually and compare it to its initial weight.
