How to separate azeotropic mix of ethanol and water?
Answers
Here clearly:
Iron is magnetic, the others are not.
Iron & sand are solid, the 2 others are not.
Not much useful differences between ethanol & water, besides boiling points.
So i would:
first stir up this wet mix with a bar magnet and get the iron filings out.
Then filter of the sand.
Then separate as good as we can the ethanol from the water by freezing out and or salting out the water, or fractionated distillation . This may not go up to a 100% separation success unless other adsorbents are used to get the last 4% water out of the alcohol, or a kind of AC to get the latest alcohol out of the water fraction.
But most if this questions are rhetorical or just principal not asking for recuperating the last few milligrams of each component of of the other(s).
