First of all iron fillings and sand dont mix at all.If we roll a bar of magnet over the miscible mixture the iron fillings gets attracted to the magnet and thus we get sand left.
This is how we separate and this process is known as Magnetic separation.

This process is mainly used in separating the iron wastes from garbage by the process of magnetic separation.
