The process of Hydro Distillation is used to separate perfume from rose petals.

Hydro Distillation is an age-old practise of extraction of oils from the different  plant parts such as wood and flower petals. We can find it in history of various ancient civilizations of Persia, India, China, and Egypt.

In this method, water and oil are exclusively separated through the process of condensation method. This is generally done to retain all the essential properties of the plant or flowers.

The plant petals are soaked in the water in a container (copper, stainless steel or glass) placed over heat. During boiling process, the steam & oil vapor is captured in the condensing apparatus. Excessive water is dispensed out through an opening in the condensing apparatus.

The final product is obtained in the receiving flask which is only the distillate. The excessive water is referred as 'hydrosol' that contains little plant essence. Eg, rose hydrosol or rose water is used for its pleasing floral aroma, mild antiseptic, and soothing nature.
