Since sand is not water soluble, if the sand and salt mixture is mixed with water, the salt will dissolve and the sand won't. The salt solution can be separated from the sand with decantation or filtration. Allowing the water to evaporate from the salt solution (which can be expedited by heating) recovers the salt.
