The value of the number differs dependent on it’s place. Let’s take the number 3. By itself it represents the sum of 1+1+1. Now let’s look at the number 31,233. The number has 5 places. The first three on the far right is in the first place which represent single digits so the 3 there represents 3. The next 3 is in the space that represents double digits or tens. 3 tens equals thirty so the 3 in the second position represents 30. The next 3 is in the 5th place and this position for ten thousand. Following the same logic in the second position we have 3 ten thousands we is 3 times ten thousand so the three in the fifth position represents thirty thousand
