Answer: To solve a question on electrolysis we need to know about the Anode, Cathode, Electrolyte and about metals and non-metals, also about ionic substances, molten substances, concentrated and dilute solutions.

Example question,

Where do the Sodium go during the electrolysis of Molten Sodium Chloride, to the anode or cathode?

Answer; First you have to know the ions present, [ Na+ ions and Cl- ions]

then you have to know to what electrode does the negative ions attract and where does the positive ions attract.

Ions attract to opposite charged electrodes.

So Na+ ions go to Cathode and Cl- ions go to the anode.

So the answer is that sodium goes to the Cathode.
