x/3 + y/4 = 4

4x + 3y = 12 --> ( i ).

x/2 - y/4 = 1

2x - y = 4 --> ( ii ).

multiplying ( ii ) by 2,

4x - 2y = 8 --> ( iii )

Subtracting ( i ) and ( ii ),

4x + 3y - 4x + 2y = 12 - 8

5y = 4

\fbox{ y \:=\: 4/5}

Putting value of Y in ( i ),

4x + 3(4/5) = 12

4x = 12 - ( 12/5 )

4x = 12 [ 1 - ( 1/5 )]

x = 3 - ( 3/5 )

x = ( 15 - 3 ) /5

\fbox{ x\:=\: 12/5}
