How to solve the problem if a planet were suddenly stopped in its orbit supposed circular show that it would fall into the sun in a time which is √2/8 times of its period?

We will consider r as the radius of the orbit.

And the time which will be taken to reach the sun is 't'

And the time taken for the planet to revolve around the sun r = T

We will consider the planet to reach the sun is an elliptical path with time period 2t′=T′

Here we will use the Kepler's law:

T′/T=(r′/r)^3/2

r′=1/2 r

T′=T(1/2)3/2

t′=T(1/2)3/2×1/2

t′=√2/8 T
