5 \frac{1}{2}  + 7 \frac{1}{4}  \\  =  \frac{(5 \times 2) + 1}{2}  +  \frac{(7 \times 4) + 1}{4}  \\  =  \frac{11}{2}  +  \frac{29}{4}  \\  =  \frac{22 + 29}{4}  \\  =  \frac{51}{4}  \\  = 12.75
