x - 1 = 5x + 3x - 8

We're essentially just trying to get "x" isolated, or by itself.

So, we must subtract 5x from both sides.

p - 1 - 5x = 3x - 8

Then, you subtract 3x from both sides.

p - 1 - 5x - 3x = -8

You then add 1 to both sides.

p - 5x - 3x = -8 + 1

Simplify.

-4x - 3x = -7

Simplify.

-7x = -7

Divide both sides by -7.

x = 1
