When we are going along water current then we are moving downstream and also we add the speed of water current to the speed our boat.
But when we are going upstream then we are moving in the direction opposite to that of water current and that water movement resists the movement of our boat and that's why we subtract the speed of water current from the speed of the boat.
Hindi mai kahu toh hum upstream movement ke time water ki speed ko cheerte hue jaa rahe hai ya aage badh rahe or tabhi hum water ki speed ko apni boat ki speed se minus kar dete hai....I
