This is an approximation method.. It gives the correct answer upto 2 decimals.

Take the next nearest perfect square, here it is 100

1) find its square root --  here it is 10
2) find difference between perfect square and given number -- here it is 17.4
3) Now, find out  --- (difference)/ (2 x square root ) = 17.4/ (2 x 10) = 17.4 / 20 = 0.87
4) Subtract step 3 from step 1 to get the answer

here, it is 10 - 0.87 = 9.13
