Answer:

The answer to this question depends greatly on the nature of the exam, but I'll point out that it's always worth your time to consider the motivation of the test-maker.

Most of the time, you're not being tested on the facts of the story. This is to say that you're not being tested on what happened, but rather the significance those events. The reason for that is simple. Nobody ever became an English Literature teacher because they were passionate about making kids memorize the sequence of events in a written story. Instead, your instructor is probably much more interested in gauging whether you've understood the significance of the events in the novel.

Accordingly, you should ask yourself why the author set out to write this particular novel in this particular way at this particular moment in history.

Read that last bit again.

How he or she hope you'd feel while reading it? In other words, what's the take-away from the story? How did the author hope you'd be changed after having read this story? What methods (plot devices, literary techniques, etc.) does the author utilize to create this experience for you, the reader? And, significantly, how and why is the novel historically relevant today? Does it speak to every generation's eternal themes, or does it serve as a snapshot of a unique experience in the context of a historical event or era?

On a separate level, what are the motivations that drive each character within the story? How do they come into conflict with one another? What event(s) provide resolution for these conflicts? Are the events fated to occur, or are the characters in control of their destinies? And to what degree does the author leave it up to the reader to decide these answers?

In short:

Understand your instructor's motivations.

Understand the basic sequence of events in the story.

Understand the significance of those events to the characters within the story.

Understand the protagonist's and antagonist's motivations.

Understand the relevance or historical significance of the novel.

Understand the themes of the novel.

Use this as a checklist, make sure you've got an adequate answer to each item on it, and you'll do well on any exam.

If all else fails, actually reading the book can't hurt.
