I would tell you to read novels. As you read keep a dictionary with you so that when you encounter a new word, you can immediately check the meaning.

Practise plenty of writing skills. Use the new words you learn in them and adopt a style of writing from the novels you read that appeals to you.

This will help in exams as well as in the long run when it comes to communicating skills, which is of utmost importance in today's world
