In problem 7, the symbol is NOT y, it is actually gamma which represents a constant value for different gases (5/3 for mono atomic and 7/5 for diatomic). It is the ratio of Cp and Cv. It's usually used in adiabatic processes and helps define the process that the gas is undergoing. The same gamma is used also in determining how fast sound travels in a gas by the formula given in your picture.
