Question: How to train the mind to respond instead of reacting to the provoking situations?
<A very good question!>
Ans: Responding and reacting are two different things. When you react, you make yourself defensive and angry at the same time and can go to any level just to protect yourself.
When you respond, its more thoughtful and tactical way to answer someone, it contains reasoning and humbleness.
Reason or difference between both can be defined as the former one is guided by emotions and latter one is guided by logic.
Responding may be passive in nature, as we are going second in a series. However, a response is more active, and it can change the direction of an interaction. And it can become the effective response.
When you want to respond rather than react, you should follow the given steps.
- Be Calm: When you're calm, you take your actions logically and decisively. Which is the way you can respond in a better way.
- Take A Deep Breath: Whenever you feel to react rather than respond first take a deep breath, and only then respond proactively.
- Be Attentive: For responding in the better way you should become more attentive of your surroundings and people, it will help you to analyze better and respond to them and to the situations in a better and effective way.
- Releasing Tension: Sometimes some situations arise when the opposite party wants us to react, this is where it becomes tricky, you have to release all the tension and fear from your mind and body and calm yourself to answer them proactively. This is the most effective way to respond rather than react.
You see, you have to stay calm in most situations, and by staying calm is the only way to respond.
