Data transfer works by packet switching using layers (Application, Transport, Network, Data Link). From the source: The application layer uses the correct protocol to identify what data is being sent e.g FTP, IMAP, SMTP etc. The transport layer uses TCP to split the data into packets.

data to be transferred is converted to segments as packets

all the packets contains a header containing details of itself and the next packet

all the packets are transferred from computer to computer and reached to destination computer

Destination computer recives all the packets and acknowledgement is sent

if there is loss or mismatch of packets then the whole process takes place again
