To convert toluene to benzene first treat toulene with KMnO4 which will oxidise it to benzoic acid. And the next step would be to heat the benzoic acid in CaO(sodalime) which will remove the acid and the final product will be benzene. There are two steps for the conversion of Toluene into Benzene.

1.Oxidize toluene to benzoic acid using potassium permanganate.  2.Treat benzoic acid so formed with sodium metal to replace acidic hydrogen and form sodium benzoate.  3.Treat sodium benzoate with soda-lime(decarboxylation) to get your final product toluene.
