How to understand the pschye of a character in acting?

Well, the first thing I do is research the time period that the play/musical is based around and how certain people (depending on class or race) were treated in that time period. That usually shapes how my character moves and reacts to certain situations. Another thing that I, personally do is create a backstory for the character starting all the way from childhood (granted they don't already have one created!)
