Before DNA, blood typing narrowed down who could be that person, but could not directly ID them.

Now most people have assorted antibodies in their blood specific to them. (Like how organs are matched). So if you have a fresh sample of blood to compare the evidence to, it can be matched. But more often the existing identifying thing is hair or something other than blood so it's better to match the sample with DNA which has more possible sources on older things that are know to be the victims.

Answer:

Blood typing is used to determine an individual's blood group, to establish whether a person is blood group A, B, AB, or O and whether he or she is Rh positive or Rh negative
