CnH2n+2.First,put value of no.of carbon atoms in this formula.let's assume that it is 2.then put this 2 in place of n.The formula now becomes C2H4+2 that is C2H6

General formula C_nH_{(2n+2)}

  • The given general formula is used to find the members belonging to the alkane family.
  • To find members in the order, different value is assigned to 'n'. When the formula is solved with the assigned value it gives the name of the alkane.
  • For example, to find the 5^{th} member of the alkane family the following calculation must be done:

Assign n = 5, in C_nH_{(2n+2)

C_5H_{(2(5)+2) = C_5H_{(10+2) = C_5H_{12}

  • From the above calculation the 5^{th} member of the alkane family is identified as pentane (C_5H_{12})
